Editing Guidelines

Status: AlexanderDupuy has started the description of the different EditTypes. Along with these explanantions there come some guidelines on how to do good edits. This is currently in the very beginning. I list every link to an EditingGuideline that I could find (some of these are BadWikiNames though).

There is also a (rather unmaintained) page named InformationOnEditing. I am not sure what we should do with that one. --DonRedman

I've been working on a collection of pages that I hope will form the basis for Editing Guidelines that complement the current Style Guide. Where the Style Guide tells you how entries should look when they are done, the Editing Guidelines are intended to tell you the best way to get there.

The pages describe each of the different moderation types, or to use the new terminology, EditTypes. Please check them out, and leave them better, more accurate, and more complete than when you found them. I've been working on these for a while, and there's still a lot left to do. Beyond these pages documenting the EditTypes as part of the EditingProcess , eventually there should be individual pages for the guideline items, as well as an overview on this page, which groups them thematically / philosophically. One idea is to be able to paste links to the wiki into moderation notes, providing bite-sized and relevant advice on editing to other moderators while voting on their edits (that's what the selectable bullet links on the EditType pages are for; see discussion on EditTypeExample).

There should probably also be some pages describing the best ways to handle special editing situations. Some examples would be:

• Undoing incorrect release merges
  • Splitting out DiscIDs with significantly different times (especially problem with classical releases)
  • Cleaning up overlapping TRMs (resulting from merges with different track orders)

• Working from Suggestion reports
  • Misencodings/uppercase/lowercase
  • Duplicate releases
  • Duplicate (and More Duplicate) artists
  • MAC conversions
  • Duplicate tracks
  • Broken / Win32 disc ids
  • Data tracks
    • Removing bogus disc ids with incorrect multisession data tracks

• Other types of chronic errors
  • "Cast" and "Soundtrack" artists
  • Video and other types of data tracks

• Look at moderators' Wiki user pages for special projects / pet peeves
